Our first Commonwealth War Graves Foundation Members Day: A recap

‘’They were all fascinating but Mel Donnelly’s talk was outstanding!’’

On Thursday 29th September we were delighted to welcome members to our Head Office in Maidenhead for our first ever Members Day.

Members were treated to several talks by different Commonwealth War Graves Commission departments.

With people travelling from far and wide, they were treated to exclusive talks from our Sustainability, Commemorations and Public Engagement teams about the work they do, as well as an update on the Non-Commemorations project.

Our commemorations task, Help Solve a Case, proved extremely popular as, under the watchful eye of Mel Donnelly our Head of Commemorations Casework, members were presented with a number of artefacts, materials, and other clues to try and identify two casualties so that they could be properly commemorated.

The progress made in our Non-Commemorations project received many questions as members were given a preview of the recently announced winner of the new Cape Town Memorial and also the radio broadcast used to advertise our oral histories work in Sierra Leone.

Members had plenty of opportunities to speak with several different members of CWGC staff, including some who delivered presentations as well as some new faces, to learn even more about the work that they do.

See below for some photos of the day.

We would like to thank all of our members who made the journey to Maidenhead for what proved to be an insightful and hugely enjoyable day for all.

We hope that next year we are able to meet more of our Members across the UK, and we promise that next year will be bigger and better.
